Blog Comments vs. Forum Posting

Any good link building campaign should utilize all methods of link building possible, including (but not limited to) blog commenting, forums posting, social media advertising, directory submission, and text link advertising.

Of the free methods of links building, blog commenting and forum posting are the most popular. But which one is the the most effective? Let's assume for this discussion that both the blog and forum do not use the no-follow tag.

For direct traffic, I think that forum posting works better. If you find a good, active forum that has topics and responses that are very closely related to your website, it shouldn't be very hard to get into the conversation, provide some value to the discussion, and drop a link. If the niche to the forum or topic is very closely related to your site, you should get some instant traffic, provided your post isn't deleted. And if the topic falls off the first page, and then someone adds a new post to the thread, the thread returns to the front page, and each time that happens, you should see a little boost in traffic again. Also, in a forum, you can often use your desired key phrase to link to your site.

But for SEO purposes, I think blog commenting works a little better. Search engines, particularly Google, seem to assign pagerank to blogposts a little easier than to forum topics, especially when the article is only 1 or 2 clicks form the homepage. And even though the blogpost will never return to the homepage of the blog, once it's drifted to the archive, a comment on a blogpost that has pagerank is a valuable commodity indeed. Unfortunately, you often are not allowed to add a link in the body of your comment, but rather must attach a link to your name.

In summary here's the pros and cons of each.

Forum Posting Pros
- More Direct Traffic Initially
- Threads get bumped to the first page with each post, providing direct traffic each time.

Forum Posting Cons
- Threads do not usually receive pagerank

----------------------------------

Blog Comment Pros
- Blogposts get pagerank easier than forums topics
- Some direct traffic initially

Blog Comment Cons
- No significan't traffic once the blogpost falls from the homepage.
- Cannot usually use your targeted keyphrase in your link

As I stated at the beginning of the article, a good link building campaign will need both, as well as article marketing, social networking, and text link advertisements. but it's important to know why each is needed, and what each provides.
